JCI RISE #PurposePeoplePlace

Objective

JCI RISE (Rebuild, Invest, Sustain, Evolve) aims to motivate JCI members to secure and bolster economic opportunities at the local, national and world-wide levels.

#Bethechange is JCI Hong Kong slogan in 2022 and we would like to push towards making JCI RISE a reality and an actively used campaign within our city. In Hong Kong, it is believed that National and Local Organisations have an opportunity to showcase the leadership aspect of JCI by having an active role in the rebuilding of communities, businesses and the economy and also connecting businesses, community leaders and government together in a time of desperate need for proper regeneration.

Mission Statement

To sustain and rebuild communities, economies and workforce morale as we face the impact of COVID-19 together.

Vision

To work with all sectors of society to make economies and workforces more resilient for the future.

Steps Forward

  1. Mobilisation of our team, introductions, assigning roles and an open discussion on what “sustainable recovery” means to us
  2. Broadening the debate on “business development” and “young entrepreneurship”, and a deep dive discussion to gain clarity on what the purpose of our projects is
  3. Identifying the direction that the new project will take based on problem identification and analytical outcome.
  4. Deciding on the scope of a project and focus while agreeing on the way forward by informing the board of directors.

Background

Hong Kong, together with the rest of the world, has been through experiences that now require it to regenerate and rebuild itself into something new, something stronger. Examples being the current pandemic with its economical downfall.

JCI Hong Kong’s RISE Affairs Team is aimed at empowering members to believe themselves capable enough to be the ones making the well needed grassroot changes in our society. Growing tomorrow’s leaders is, after all, the goal of JCI. These leaders are needed now more than ever.

It is up to us to invest in the future. Only by building a common identity with a shared vision for the future, can Hong Kong progress on a path toward rebuilding its economy, society and the confidence of its people.

Needs of Hong Kong

The general agreement was that there would need to be a focus on the economy and business side. It was also seen as important to focus also on the individual needs of each and every individual and a focus on a new wave of local leaders ready to work together to regenerate and rebuild Hong Kong into a strong global city and gateway to Greater China.

Our Goals

to see where our society will need support in the rebuilding process

Action Items

  1. Green Procurement Manual
  2. Collaboration with other like-minded organizations
  3. RISE workshops
  4. RISE report

Action Plan

Following evaluating the aforesaid action items. It was agreed upon that the proposed solution should connect the following themes:

The aim behind these is to empower our members into being active leaders of positive change within our society through different project ideas that we could implement in based on the above three themes. These align with the four pillars of JCI, being Business, Individual, Community and International.

Implementing JCI RISE in 2 Easy Steps

Step 1 – #PurposePeoplePlace Method

The first step is for local chapters to look into the kind of areas the society needs to improve in but looking retrospectively through the below suggested method #PurposePeoplePlace, as well as the Active Citizenship Framework.

PurposePeoplePlace
What matters to you?Who will you work with to address this and succeed? How will your leadership be seen as an example?
The economyWith membersIn Hong Kong
The communityWith politiciansIn your region / district
Local leadersWith community groupsIn our business
BusinessesWith charitiesIn our organisation
InfrastructureWith Chambers of CommerceIn District Council and The LegCo
And many more…And many more…And many more…

Step 2 – Derive the question

Local chapters then have a question to work with using the three different aspects (#PurposePeoplePlace) and you can probably come up with a project that you feel is relevant to the community’s needs.

Project Example 1: Leaders Townhall

Local chapter chooses its focus for the city through the #PurposePeoplePlace. Below find the reasoning behind Project Example 1.

PurposePeoplePlace
What matters to you?Who will you work with to address this and succeed? How will your leadership be seen as an example?
The CommunityWith Business & Political LeadersIn your region / district

The above choice of focus will lead to the posing of such a question to local chapters:

“How can we rebuild our community, connect with businesses and political leaders, and demonstrate leadership in our city?”

Based on the above, local chapters can then run the following sample project:

Leaders Townhall: local chapters set interviews, webinars, panel discussions, meetings etc with prominent business and political leaders to hear how they are rebuilding communities in 2022.

Project Example 2: Workplace Bootcamp

Local chapter chooses its focus for the city through the #PurposePeoplePlace. Below find the reasoning behind Project Example 2.

PurposePeoplePlace
What matters to you?Who will you work with to address this and succeed? How will your leadership be seen as an example?
Young PeopleBusinessesIn different workplaces

The above choice of focus will lead to the posing of such a question to local chapters:

How can we rebuild young people, connect with businesses, and demonstrate leadership in different workplaces?”

Based on the above, local chapters can then run the following sample project:

Workplace Bootcamp: As the leading organization of young leaders, we can provide training opportunities for university students by delivering a workplace bootcamp. It can focus on increasing the employability prospects of these individuals, helping them take charge of their own lives and also potentially assist in the putting together of their own resumes.

How to brand related projects

If you plan to run a project as part of JCI RISE, you have to make use of JCI RISE branding (JCI RISE logo and branding guidelines).  Additionally, kindly make use of the hashtags *#bethechange*, *#RiseWithJCI* and *#PurposePeoplePlace* in the text of the post. This will help other countries and regions see what projects are being executed in Hong Kong and will build a ripple effect of projects and knowledge transfers.

Conclusion

Following a period of uncertainty, Hong Kong, together with the rest of the world, will need to double its efforts in regenerating and rebuilding itself, its economy, its business and its human resources. There’s no better way of fulfilling the JCI mission and vision in Hong Kong at this point in time than being a force of empowerment to our individual members, our communities and our businesses in each and every district. We need to be active agents of positive change by standing up, supporting and also leading our community to be better. # PurposePeoplePlace as part of JCI RISE is the way JCI Hong Kong members can set a high bar with projects derived from the above samples. Together, we can shape a better future for our city, and set an example for the world to follow.
